Empowering Future Leaders: Highlights from the 2024 Global Energy Show's Nextgen Zone

The 2024 Global Energy Show is an international, premier event in the energy sector, showcasing the latest innovations and developments across the global energy landscape. Held from June 11-13 in Calgary, Alberta, this conference brought together industry leaders, policymakers, and cutting-edge technology developers to showcase and discuss emerging trends and sustainable practices, providing invaluable insights for entrepreneurs looking to navigate and influence the future of energy. The show offered a dynamic platform for entrepreneurs to connect with potential investors, partners, and customers, fostering an environment ripe for innovation and collaboration. 

Kara Thorvaldson, Program Manager at the Diversity Institute and Co-Lead for WEKH Alberta, joined the Nextgen Zone as a panelist for the session "Developing Leadership Skills and Entrepreneurial Mindset in the Energy Sector," which took place on Wednesday, June 12. During the session, Thorvaldson, along with other esteemed speakers, shared insights on leadership development, fostering innovation, and navigating challenges unique to the energy sector. Moderated by Katie Smith-Parent, Executive Director of Young Women in Energy (YWE), the panel also included Kelly Johnson, Program Manager at Careers in Energy, a division of Energy Safety Canada, Rory Wheat, VP of Development at Varme Energy, and Lhyna Ramos, Senior Greenhouse Gas Analyst at CarbonAi. Attendees left with a deeper understanding of the leadership qualities essential for advancing their careers, an enhanced entrepreneurial mindset, and practical advice on overcoming sector-specific challenges. The session concluded with a 15-minute Q&A, providing further opportunities for engagement and learning.
